Miyako Sunset Beach
One of the most popular spots to watch the sunset in Miyako Island is Miyako Sunset Beach. It is located in Twuriba area, which is about 3km from the city center of Miyako Island.
Miyako Sunset Beach is an artificial beach, so the beach itself is not so beautiful compared to other natural beaches in Miyako Island, but as the name “Miyako Sunset Beach” suggests, this is one of the best beaches in Miyako Island to watch the sunset. The beach offers a spectacular view of Irabu Ohashi Bridge and the sun setting over the bridge. And I think you can watch the beautiful sunset from here regardless of the season.
If you visit the beach at sunset, you will often see tourists coming here to enjoy the beautiful sunset, as well as local people taking a walk along the beach.
Irabu Ohashi Bridge opened on January 2015, and the beach was recently developed as well, so you can say this beach is one of new sightseeing spots in Miyako Island.

Yonaha Maehama Beach
Probably the most famous beach in Miyako Island is Yonaha Maehama Beach which is located in the south-west of the island. It is about 10km from the city center, and if you take a taxi from the city center, it will cost you around 2,000 yen. The total length of the beach is around 7km, and it is called “the most beautiful beach in the Orient.”
If you want to fully enjoy the beauty of the beach, I recommend you to stay at Miyakojima Tokyu Hotel & Resorts which is located in front of Yonaha Maehama Beach. It is one of the best resort hotels in Miyako Island.
Yonaha Maehama Beach was selected as the best beach in Japan by TripAdvisor’s ranking for three years in a row from 2013.
The beach offers a view of Kurima Island and Kurima Bridge which connects Miyako Island and Kurima Island, and together with the white powder-fine sand and emerald green water, they make the scenery of Yonaha Maehama Beach special. The beautiful scenery of Yonaha Maehama Beach will be something you will never forget!

There are other nice beaches on the east coast of Miyako Island, as well as in Ikema Island and Kurima Island, and Irabu Island which connect to Miyako Island via bridges, but these four beaches (Painagama Beach, Sunayama Beach, Miyako Sunset Beach, and Yonaha Maehama Beach) I mentioned are not so far from the city center of Miyako Island, so if you have never visited Miyako Island before, I recommend you to visit these four beaches first.
